San Luis Obispo jewelry artist, Kari Appleton has been designing jewelry since childhood. In High School she began using the Lost Wax method to design her jewelry. Finding some of her early pieces, she remarked that her style has not changed over time. “I loved natural stones in organic shapes then and I still do now”. She prefers working with tumbled, freeform stones with antiqued and mixed metals. She especially likes copper for its warmth and compatibility with natural stones. Each piece of jewelry is designed to be one of a kind and sometimes a feat of engineering in an effort to create something different. “If I made 10 of the same thing it would actually be faster than what I’m doing”, commented Kari. Since each piece is unique her pieces are constantly evolving- getting something figured out, like a unique way to attach a pendant will lead her into something else and so on.
Originally, Kari was making and designing jewelry to fill her own needs but then she would find a pendant or a strand of beads that would encourage a design combination and another necklace. When people started complimenting her and asking if she had a shop she decided to launch into selling her work. “It allows me to keep the creative process going”, she says. “Something will inspire me and I just have to see if I can make it my way.” Rustic, natural, eclectic and asymmetrical are some of the words that come to mind to describe her work. |
