My name is Waawaaskonenhens (Little Flower). I am a proud member of the Odawa Tribe, Three Fires Nation, and honored to be born to the Bear Clan of the Wikwemikong Band of the Ojibwa and Odawa First Nations. Part of a large family, my many brothers and sisters are all very talented artisans, musicians and authors .
Having learned to draw at a very young age, art has always been a big part of my life and has had a tremendous influence on it. The beauty of a finished work has always fascinated and given me the desire to pick up a pen, pencil, piece of charcoal, paint brush and, here in my later years, a beading needle. Drawing on both ancestry and my love of art, I have used beads as the medium with which to combine the two into uniqueness of design and blending of colors for one-of-a-kind pieces. Since I am somewhat of a perfectionist, I continuously strive to make each piece the best it can possibly be.
Being born of two different worlds but never truly belonging to either one, trying to bridge the worlds and cope with life events was confusing and a constant struggle to achieve balance and harmony. Now, through an unfaltering faith in Creator, heritage, art and unconditional love, I have found balance and harmony -- my spirit is finally at peace. As a result, every piece of art and jewelry, whether traditional or contemporary, comes from deep in my soul and is created with all the love and faith within me. It is my hope that my art will bring pride to the ancestors who came before me and that I leave behind a legacy for those who will come -- after I have gone. |
